Profit driven corporations have proven they can and do maintain a reliable grid. They are not monopolies and in some cases like in Texas, you can pick who you buy your power from. Only in democratic states do power companies have a complete monopoly and they fail because of it. Nationalizing the electric grid would be the ultimate monopoly and would discourage innovation and efficiency resulting in worse power deliver at more cost. The federal government should regulate power companies as a strategic national interest so foreign adversaries cannot easily exploit it.

Electricity is a human necessity, much like food, but the power grid is created and maintained through human effort, and individuals and organizations should have the right to own what they produce. Since critical infrastructure must remain under government oversight, cooperation between the public and private sectors is necessary. However, operational control should remain with the private sector, because private companies, driven by the need to recover their investments and attract customers, are more likely to provide higher-quality and more efficient services.

I agree that energy is a human right and should be affordable to all. Having the federal government maintain the grid would lead to bigger issues than are already present. Politics should not play a role in providing everyone with affordable energy.

Free market forces are better at controlling costs than federal mandates but for national security and emergency some connection would be warranted

Yeah it sucks that corporations aren't great at maintaining the electric grid, but would the federal government be any better? Imagine if trump got 100% control of the national grid and decided to punish blue states who have sanctuary laws. My point is that centralizing power to anyone like Trump, Biden, or anyone else is a terrible idea and is ripe for abuse to punish. Plus a foreign actor like Iran could take advantage of this and target this system with a lot of force and create a national blackout. Perhaps giving control to state governments would be a better option. Even giving control to the local counties and cities could be a better option. The issue is with the federal government nationalizing the grid not so much that energy is a human right

I don't like that that the federalization limits individual markets' ability to respond to electric needs. I belong to an electrical co-op, which means that we band together to buy the cheapest electricity for our members. We should be able to do that. We often don't have our power go out when Idaho Power and Light goes down. Local control and local response means the most flexibility to respond to changing circumstances.

While it is the case that corporate profit-driven monopolies exist for the sake of scraping the American consumer for all they are worth, that is why we need a new Square Deal. Government regulation is necessary to protect American consumers, and Unions are necessary to protect the workers, but nationalizing the industry wouldn't break up the monopoly, it would just transfer it to Big Brother. What happens when it becomes nationalized and someone you didn't vote for wins the election? What happens when the same NSA and CIA that violate your rights daily - also own your power? Any nationalized industry would eventually be in control of someone that you politically view as a blight on the nation. The government would own and control your energy and also have guns.
