While it is the case that corporate profit-driven monopolies exist for the sake of scraping the American consumer for all they are worth, that is why we need a new Square Deal. Government regulation is necessary to protect American consumers, and Unions are necessary to protect the workers, but nationalizing the industry wouldn't break up the monopoly, it would just transfer it to Big Brother. What happens when it becomes nationalized and someone you didn't vote for wins the election? What happens when the same NSA and CIA that violate your rights daily - also own your power? Any nationalized industry would eventually be in control of someone that you politically view as a blight on the nation. The government would own and control your energy and also have guns.
