What is your stance on abortion?
Pro-life, but allow in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother or child
We believe that life begins at conception
There is a clear scientific consensus which shows that the first stage of human life is inside the womb. A clear legal line would be at heartbeat, which is a universal indicator of life. I believe that certain exceptions should be granted to women in the cases of rape, incest, the life of the mother, or for severe birth defects. I also believe that banning abortions alone would not solve the issue, and that abortions should be considered a failure of the State. Maternal healthcare services should be expanded, the government should make it significantly easier to have a child, adoption and foster care systems should be reformed, and abortions should, regardless of bans, be seen as less necessary in the first place. The government should also expand maternity, paternity, and paid leave, while also providing subsidies and greater tax deductions to families. There should be no sales tax on baby products. I believe that abortions are immoral, but also that other avenues should be greatly expanded so that abortions themselves are less needed in the first place. I also believe that this not a debate on whether there is a life inside the womb, as that has been proven biologically, medically, and scientifically, but whether that life should be terminated. But this is also should be a debate on whether the government is doing enough to support motherhood, and the fact that abortion is such a significant debate shows that it is not, as a just society is not one with illegalized abortions, but where it has moved past the need for abortions in the first place.

While reducing the need for abortions through better support programs is important, I believe the decision should be up to the mother, with guidance from a medical doctor rather than the government. Pregnancy involves personal, medical, and financial circumstances that vary, and a legal ban may not account for those differences. Expanding healthcare, parental leave, and adoption services can help families without added restrictions. However, I am pro-choice.
