I think students should be taught the full history of their country, including the parts that are uncomfortable
In schools, topics like the Holocaust are taught in depth, and that’s important because it helps people understand the seriousness of hate and what can happen when it’s ignored. In the same way, racism should be talked about openly and honestly in education, not downplayed or treated like it’s overreacting. It’s a major part of American history, and if we don’t understand it, we risk repeating the same mistakes.
I also believe racism isn’t something people are born with—it’s something that’s learned from their environment, upbringing, and what they’re exposed to. That’s why education matters so much, because it can either help break those ideas or allow them to continue. When people are not fully taught about race and racism, it can lead to ignorance and misunderstanding in society.
There are also important people and stories in history that don’t always get enough recognition, like J. Marion Sims and the enslaved Black women who were used in his experiments. Their experiences are part of medical history, but they’re not always talked about enough in public education. Including these kinds of stories helps give a more complete and honest view of history.
